High-street DIY giant Wickes has some good advice for anyone seeking to make a room look less cluttered – introduce a design theme.
Quoting home improvement expert Warren Evans, the company says that coming up with a cohesive design can make houses look more spacious.
How do you do that? Through matching furniture, a smart paint scheme, good storage for superfluous possessions (try boxes under the bed), buying new co-ordinated linen and putting down a rug.
Wickes says Mr Evans’ comments follow research from Verdict, which predicted that sales of bedroom features are likely to grow by nearly £80 million this year.

The furniture maker said: “To create a coherent room design, I would advise that the style and decor of the furniture all complement each other – otherwise it can create a busy and cluttered look, minimising the space that you have.”
He added that natural, environmentally-friendly materials such as timber were increasing in popularity at the moment, suggesting that real-wood flooring is about to enjoy a boom. (But, as with all wood products, don’t forget to look for the FSC logo.)
