Andrew Leech, director at the National Home Improvement Council, is suggesting to homeowners that their money might be best spent on home decorating rather than taking a break: “You could say they are more essential than going away for a holiday in this day and age.”
Following news that Kingfisher Plc, the company behind popular DIY retailers Screwfix and B&Q had reported a drop in sales over the summer period, compared to figures for the same period last year, he remarked that householders might be spending on barbecues, patios, decking and garden enhancements.
He said: “People are looking forward to a nice summer and are not concentrating so much on what needs to be done inside the house.”
And he called the decision to focus on holidays rather than home improvements “a rather negative approach.” We expect travel agents representatives are saying exactly the opposite…
